چکیده
We consider extended variants of spiking neural P systems and show how these extensions of the original model allow for easy proofs of the computational completeness of extended spiking neural P systems and for the characterization of semilinear sets and regular languages by finite extended spiking neural P systems (defined by having only finite sets of rules assigned to the cells) with only a bounded number of neurons.

A boundary between universality and non-universality in spiking neural P systems
In this work we offer a significant improvement on the previous smallest spiking neural P systems and solve the problem of finding the smallest possible extended spiking neural P system. P˘ aun and P˘ aun [15] gave a universal spiking neural P system with 84 neurons and another that has extended rules with 49 neurons. Subsequently, Zhang et al. [18] reduced the number of neurons used to give un...
متن کاملAsynchronous spiking neural P systems
We consider here spiking neural P systems with a non-synchronized (i.e., asynchronous) use of rules: in any step, a neuron can apply or not apply its rules which are enabled by the number of spikes it contains (further spikes can come, thus changing the rules enabled in the next step). Because the time between two firings of the output neuron is now irrelevant, the result of a computation is th...
متن کاملA Boundary between Universality and Non-universality in Extended Spiking Neural P Systems
We solve the problem of finding the smallest possible universal spiking neural P system with extended rules. We give a universal spiking neural P system with extended rules and only 4 neurons. This is the smallest possible universal system of its kind. We prove this by showing that the set of problems solved by spiking neural P systems with 3 neurons is bounded above by NL, and so there exists ...
متن کاملMatrix Representation of Spiking Neural P Systems
Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, a discrete structure representation of SN P systems with extended rules and without delay is proposed. Specifically, matrices are used to represent SN P systems. In order to represent the computations of SN P systems...
متن کاملOn languages generated by asynchronous spiking neural P systems
In this paper, we investigate the languages generated by asynchronous spiking neural P systems. Characterizations of finite languages and recursively enumerable languages are obtained by asynchronous spiking neural P systems with extended rules. The relationships of the languages generated by asynchronous spiking neural P systems with regular and non-semilinear languages are also investigated. ...
